Raw materials update – July 2010

Chipboard producers have generally raised prices twice this year and more price hikes are planned for the second half of 2010. Producers’ costs have also risen substantially, and therefore the impact on profitability at the mills has been negligible. Lower output and the exchange rate continue to discourage European exports to the UK, and with growing concern over energy generator subsidy for wood fibre, we anticipate chipboard will become more expensive in Q3. Supplies under pressure as global costs increase

As softwood supply shortages are forecast to hit the market as a result of global pressures, National Hickman is able to reassure its customers that its supply chain is managing the situation well.

The market has seen significant price increases during 2010 as a result of reduced productivity in mills following the pattern of recession, together with the weakening of the pound combined with other World markets such as China, Japan and North America able to pay higher prices than the UK for the limited volumes available. ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL PROJECT FOR PERSIMMON

Persimmon homes’ Abrahams Way development in Telford, Shropshire might be a close neighbour of ours location-wise, but it still required our expertise in ‘just-in-time’ supply and delivery to meet the deadlines for this development of 114 new homes. It was an exciting project for us as it is part of the Ironstone Scheme – a sustainable community in a village setting. Ironstone is a key scheme for the national regeneration agency English Partnerships which will create 20% of the growth in new homes required in Telford up to 2018. Read more »
